Road to Oregon Begins

Monday, May 12th we began our 21st trip in the Airstream. These first four days have been drive days as we worked our way up to Moab, UT and then on to Missoula, MT to visit with Wes and his family. From Missoula we will make our way over to Oregon to join our first official Airstream Club Caravan.

Our first day was a big oneβ€”9 hours just to get to Amarillo. We continued into New Mexico through Albuquerque with a hopeful overnight at El Malpais National Monument. It is a first-come, first-served campground. Unfortunately, the last spot available was quite unlevel, requiring an adjustment of 12–20 inches depending on how we parked. We opted to proceed to Grants, NM. We arrived at our campsite to find a cabinet had shaken loose from the ceiling. Luckily, Tom came prepared with all the tools and only needed to pick up a few screws. Buy an RV and learn to be handy, they say. Check!

The next morning we drove north from Grants toward Colorado. On our way we stopped at Bisti Badlands Wilderness Area and took a short hike up into the hoodoos to the most bizarre land formations. After a little hand and foot we were at the top. Wow, it was amazing.

Our little spot for the night was in Dolores, CO. The campground was so beautiful and well-appointed. We spent the evening fireside, visiting with a fellow traveler from Georgia.

After a leisurely morning we began our drive toward Arches, and Canyonlands National Parks. A few months ago we scored a campsite near both national parks at Dead Horse Point State Park. Upon arrival this afternoon, we were in awe of the gorgeous cliffs and canyons. We will spend three nights here exploring around and enjoying a few days without travel.
